Shopify Plus cost breakdown (2026): is it worth it for your brand?
The headline price is $2,300/mo, but Plus's real cost includes the apps you still need, the transition tax, and the things you can already do on Advanced. Here's the honest math for a $500K MRR brand deciding whether to upgrade.
The headline number is only part of the story
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300/mo on a 3-year commit, or scales to 0.4% of revenue at higher tiers ($23K/mo at $100M ARR). For a brand doing $500K MRR ($6M ARR), that's roughly $27K-$28K/year. Compared to Shopify Advanced at $399/mo, the delta is roughly $23K/year — meaningful but not the dealbreaker most operators think.
The real cost question isn't the Shopify bill. It's whether the features that come with Plus produce more than $23K/year in incremental revenue or saved engineering cost.
What Plus actually open up
Four features that don't exist on Advanced:
- Checkout extensibility (apps in checkout). The biggest one. You can install apps that modify the checkout itself — upsells, custom payment logic, gift wrapping, B2B price tables. Sub-Plus brands cannot.
- Shopify Functions for cart/discount/payment logic. Custom Rust-compiled functions for bespoke pricing, discount stacking, and shipping logic.
- B2B (wholesale) on a separate channel. Quote requests, NET 30 terms, customer-specific catalogs and pricing. Replaces a $500+/mo wholesale app.
- Multi-store under one org. Up to 200 stores in one Shopify Plus org. Useful for multi-brand or multi-region setups.
What you can already do on Advanced
This is where most brands over-upgrade. Things people think require Plus but don't:
- Custom checkout extensions via the Customer Account UI extensions (introduced 2024) — works on Advanced.
- Most third-party apps (Klaviyo, Recharge, Yotpo, Rebuy) work identically on Advanced and Plus.
- Custom themes, including Liquid and Hydrogen storefronts — Advanced supports both.
- Multi-currency selling — Advanced supports up to 133 currencies.
- Custom domains, advanced report builder, abandoned cart recovery — all Advanced features.
If the only reason you want Plus is "to seem enterprise," you're wasting money. Real upgrade triggers are checkout customization needs or a B2B channel that requires Plus features.
When the math works
Upgrade triggers, in order of frequency:
- You need a checkout app that requires Plus. Most upsell-in-checkout (Rebuy Smart Cart, Bold Checkout) and complex B2B price tables only work at the Plus tier.
- Wholesale revenue justifies it. If your B2B channel is doing $500K+/year, a Plus B2B implementation typically beats a third-party wholesale app on UX + COGS.
- You're running 2+ regional stores. Multi-store org consolidates billing + admin for $0 extra per store.
The honest verdict
Sub-$1M ARR: stay on Shopify Advanced ($399/mo). The Plus features rarely produce $23K/year in incremental value.
$1M-$5M ARR: evaluate based on whether checkout extensibility solves a specific problem. If you have a checkout-specific feature request from your team or an app you can't install, Plus pays for itself.
$5M+ ARR: Plus is usually correct. Custom checkout, wholesale, multi-store, and dedicated support become real ROI.
$10M+ ARR: not really a question — Plus is table stakes.
